Fighting to bring bus services back to South Gloucestershire

Over the years, our area has lost many bus services that were relied upon by local residents. Our village was one of the worst affected thanks to the cancellation of the Y3.  This leaves us without a regular service from and to Iron Acton. Users now have to walk 20-30 minutes down Nibley Lane to catch the Y1, which is not an option for the elderly or infirm.

This service was cruelly axed when First Bus were charging the extortionate price of £7 for a return to Yate. We see it as grossly unfair to deny residents of a regular bus, based on usage figures from when you had to pay £3.50 a mile for this short 2-mile trip. With the bus cap now in place, numbers would surely be far higher.

Buses as a solution to traffic problems

Our area is suffering from ever-increasing traffic clogging up local roads and increasing journey times. The solution to this is provide viable travel alternatives so people can choose to leave the car at home. Reliable and affordable public transport is a crucial part of this. Buses take far less space to carry the same number of people than private cars. See the below illustration for how this works:

We have seen the congestion that is caused when the only viable option for residents is to take the car. A recent government study stated that “traffic congestion is a significant constraint on economic growth” in the Bristol area. Current housebuilding plans will serve to only increase these problems if public transport is not fixed. A healthy South Gloucestershire is one where all can move around freely and safely, the way they choose.
