Silverback Arboricultural Consultancy together with Iron Acton Parish Council and South Glos Council organised a tree planting day with the children of Iron Acton Primary School on 4^th March 2022 in Chillwood. 

Over the course of the day, four groups of children from the school came to Chillwood to plant native tree saplings in the woods, such as Oak, Hazel, Scots Pine, and Silver Birch. Approximately 150 trees were planted, staked and tree shelters fixed to the stakes to protect the trees as they grow.

Chillwood is a designated semi ancient woodland which contains mostly large mature trees with little understorey or young trees to replace the existing trees that will naturally either die from age or tree diseases such as  Ash Dieback Disease. 

Recently works to remove invasive Holly trees, as detailed in the 5 years management plan, had created ideal spaces for new tree planting.  The new planting will hopefully help ensure the longevity and succession of the woods which can then be enjoyed by future generations.

It was also hoped that the generation of children who planted the trees may now engender feelings of responsibility and stewardship for the woodland and natural environment we are all so reliant on. We hope the planting will inspire the children and all people to looking after their environment and creating spaces for nature they can enjoy throughout their life and share with the generations to come.
