Recently local residents joined Parish and Ward councillors to walk Nibley Lane where the following points were noted :

Noticeable sharp increase in traffic through traffic including larger vehicles especially commercial trucks & delivery vans
Used as a cut through
Single track with sharp bends & limited passing places
As part of Avon Cycle Way & Frome Valley Walk – heavily leisure use by local walkers, cyclists and horse riders
Frequent near misses & abuse from motorists

The Nibley Lane junction with Badminton Road is deceptively wide as the lane quickly narrows with no pavement & drivers turning in are concentrating on traffic on the main road rather than Nibley Lane and generally miss the 20mph sign.
At the first sharp bend in Nibley there is poor visibility in both directions traffic speeds up as it rounds the bend & there is no room to install a footpath. This makes pulling out of these parking places or the driveway on the other side of the sharp bend is dangerous.

Suggested Safety Improvements

Close the lane to motorised vehicles either side of Robin Hood railway bridge
Introduce cameras to discourage fly tipping
Quiet Lanes approach could be adopted
Speed tables within village where there is street lighting
Improve signage and painting on road to show drivers this is part of the Frome Valley Walkway

Making Nibley Lane Safer Petition

The deadline for both the on line or paper based petition has now passed and the data has been collated in preparation of being presented to South Gloucestershire Council at a forthcoming meeting.

Below is the latest information relating to the issues raised regarding Nibley Lane & an outline of some proposals for reaching some solutions to these problems.

Nibley Lane Safety Meeting

In February Cllr Young attended a site meeting on Nibley Lane with Cllr Steve Reade (the Executive Member with responsibility for transport) and Rob Wiltsher (South Gloucestershire Council’s Assess and Decide engineer for our area). The outcome of the meeting was:

• SGC will draw up plans for roundels on the road/new signage, in the short term, to reinforce the 20mph speed limit and alert road users to the likelihood of meeting pedestrians, cyclists and horses in the road.
• As the Avon Cycleway, which includes part of Nibley Lane, is managed by Sustrans SGC will contact them to raise the profile of signage. 
• SGC will also look at, in the longer term, what would be feasible in terms of a road closure and remodelling the layout at the Nibley Lane – Badminton Road junction.

Cllr Young has contacted both Iron Acton Parish Council and Westerleigh Parish Council about doing straw polls of parishioners on the option of closing the road to motorised vehicles. She explained to Cllr Reade that a petition has already been submitted, on behalf of Iron Acton Parish Council, which demonstrated strong support for such a closure from Nibley residents. Cllr Reade was keen, however, to get a feel for how the wider population feels, particularly those living in Iron Acton and nearby villages who might use it regularly. 

Cllr Young has also written to Lee Lodder and Liz Kinsey, of the Frome Reconnected project, to discuss the possibility of routing the Frome Valley Walkway along the river rather than the road.
